April Showers

Let’s not beat around the bush– April sucks. Everything about the month of April is like a constant downhill spiral which demolishes every last inch of your sanity. Even author T.S. Elliot once wrote “April is the cruelest month”. What exactly did he mean by that? You tell me.

For students at Corvallis High School, it’s no secret that April is well-hated. Because most AP test dates are set early in May, upperclassman spend April with their noses inside of textbooks, cramming for the big day. With Spring Break behind us and exactly zero four day weeks of class to look forward to this month, it is safe to say that April is the worst.

Don’t even bother looking for a sunny spot to unwind on an easy weekend. You won’t find one. Do you remember last April? We were lucky to get a couple of clear hours. So be prepared to hole up inside your house like a bear and wait out the weather. Not to mention spring allergies– all of this rain sends pollen adrift, making anyone allergy-prone miserable with constant sneezing and a runny nose. Plus, if your one for superstition, keep your guard up because this April hails the first Friday the 13th of the year. Friday the 13th is notorious for being the unluckiest day, so you’d better be on your toes for any potential threat.

Numerous tragedies have occurred in the month of April. Among these are Hitler’s birth in 1889 and the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. April has staged some of the world’s most devastating assassinations, including that of Abraham Lincoln as well as Martin Luther King Jr. If that’s not enough to convince you that something’s up with April, take a look at some more recent events. The Oklahoma bombing of 1995, the Columbine shooting of 1999, and the Virginia Tech shooting of 2007 all took place in the month of April.

As the 30 day month drags along, we’re all going to be doing our best to make it through in one piece. If it is true that “April showers bring May flowers”, then we’ve got something to look forward to. Just know, if this month is getting you down, you’re not alone.
